Avatar

Well guess who's back in the motherfuckin' house, with a fat review for your motherfuckin' mouth. Avatar has to be one of the most hyped films of the decade. James Cameron's sci-fi record is unmatched and impecable: Terminator 1 & 2, Aliens, and the Abyss- which all featured revolutionary CG technology. So now here comes Avatar. A $500 million dollar film with revolutionary 3D, and a brand-spankin-new form of motion capture. I went to the midnight premier, along with every mouth-breathing world of warcraft addict in the tri-county area, and here's my review 24hours later.

Heres the deal folks. Ima break the review down into two sections, the visual, and the story.

Visually- 5/5 it really is a new kind of 3D and it looks amazing. Undeniably phenomenal in Imax 3d. Revolutionary technology, and yes you can tell the difference.

The Story- I walked into the theater wanting to love this movie. But holy fucking hell. What a pile of shit. Are you fucking kidding me Cameron? I thought we were cool, man. Remember when we had common goals? You had the formula down- Bill Paxton + Violence = Classic. This movie was basically like Cameron was like- "Hey, let's mix all the shitty parts of the Matrix, with Ferngully, and stretch that into the framework of a 2 and a half hour version of the Ewok fight from Return of the Jedi". You fucking cunt, you made titanic and it went to your head. Hellen Keller could have written better dialogue. And seriously, there's a reason why Sigourney Beaver didn't do jack shit after the Aliens movies. OK, ok. Maybe I'm being too harsh. But the film is like... nothing. It's like eating unflavored tofu- yeah it's food, but why the fuck eat it? The movie is predictable start to finish from the trailer. Did you see the trailer? Do you kind of know what it's about? guess what? you're right! Exactly that happens, who'd of thought? And what the fuck is with the pg13 rating? Gotta ensure that mass appeal right? The only good part in the whole movie was that apparently the Thundercats ride on birds by raping them.

When the steamy pile of shit that is Terminator Salvation came out, I was like, "awe man, Cameron could have made this amazing" but no, now i don't think he could have. I trusted you Cameron. And you told me you loved me, not directly but I could tell by the way you made your movies. Then you took $16.50 from me. Good luck making back your $500,000,000.00, you fucking dick. Maybe you should have written a better story in the 15 years you spent making this. You know what the worst part of this is? The George Lucas parallels, that's what hurts the hardest. 2009 is the year that James Cameron died and Neill Blomkamp was born. And the universe is one again. Now if you'll excuse me, me and my high horse will be leaving.

2.5/5- you've seen this movie a lot of times already, if you're gonna see it, watch it in 3D. If not, you can afford to miss this.

-eddie

no links unless you want a cam, and if you're the type of person that can stand to watch cam rips, you're probably exactly the type of twat that would like Avatar. And i hope you die.

OFF WITH THEIR HEADS- FROM THE BOTTOM

This band has gotten tons of hype and has a slew of full lengths and Eps floating around out in the record world. They have an upcoming tour with The Queers and they played with Municipal Waste in good old Anaheim aka Anal Slime. They looked and sounded like a band that should be on Epitaph but I thought hey people were shaking their money makers maybe I'm not getting it or something. Downloaded "From The Bottom" and it made me want to join a fraternity and hang out at the local pub while I sing along to their anthem infused pop punk. This sounds like a dirtier Bouncing Souls or Dropkick Murphys which is like being the slightly more shit stained toilet scrubber. Not only does the music do nothing for me and is completely predictable but the lyrics are generic "I'm sick of the bullshit" and "I don't give a fuck anymore" type stuff, which I have had enough of for a lifetime. When I saw them live the singer sang some words alone on stage that stated "Don't believe what you read, don't believe what you see on TV" and at that time Bulimia seemed like a more enjoyable alternative to watching them play. Yeah, some of this stuff might get stuck in your head but that never made Cher's "Believe" a good song. Or did it?

ANTICHRIST (2009)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0870984/
I'm back motherfuckers and boy-howdy do I have something for you. WILLEM DE FO-FIVE-SIX-SIX-SIX. Don't expect this to be about a big red guy in a rubber suit. Directed by Lars Von Trier, who is know for his "unsimulated sex" and "explicit imagery" in his dramas, really pushed the limits of... everything in this horror. It's about a husband (De fo-five-six) and wife (some singer lady) who's baby died and she takes it real bad, and he’s like lets go to the forest (Eden) you're afraid of, and then the shit hits the fuckin fan. Prep yourself for symbolic imagery, psychotic delusions, warped reality, and some things that I haven't ever seen before. I don't even want to tell you any of the key points as to why this is so vulgar/violent/fucked/original. You can look elsewhere if you want to find out gore spoilers. Just know that this is the most fucked up movie I've ever seen in years. Keep in mind that this is not a regular torture-porn flick, as it forces the viewer to grow very attached to the characters and really feel their psychological pain as well.

This is an art film, not a slasher, so much so that you gotta work at it if you really wanna understand what's going on. It's more of a frightening drama than a horror. Pretty fuckin wicked.

For better or worse I can’t stop thinking about it- 5/5

Cannomen Demo Tapes

These fine young gentlemen burst out of the lovely region known as the South in the sweltering state of Tennessee. Featuring members of Life Trap this band plays a brand of catchy yet snotty punk rock thats hard to compare to any one band. What I like about these two demo tapes so much is that after one listen the rhythms and words get caught in your head, not in the Ricky Martin "Livin La Vida Loca" sort of way where every electrical chord reminds you of how bad you'd like to strangulate yourself but in a way that makes this band stand out and gets you stoked to listen to it again. I like that I can't compare it to other bands easily but for you people who will not check out stuff unless I name drop then think early so cal punk rock, equal parts SST and Posh Boy but with more of an edge. A good modern reference would be Deep Sleep but Cannomen do it catchier and make me feel much more inclined to give it up on the first date. I also read elsewhere a reference to Texas bands when hearing this and yes a Really Red and Dicks vibe exists as well. Scorching instruments, refreshing unique vocals, and a lot of man sweat is what you can expect from these guys. Highly Recommended! Check out their myspace and order the demo tapes!

RIPPING HEADACHE EP

K- TOWN strikes again! If you know anything about K-Town and all the great hardcore and punk that has come out of there then this ep should make your penis tip moist or your labia quiver with anticipation. The hardcore from this region of the world had slowed down for awhile to make room for great punk bands such as No Hope For The Kids but this record brings da hardcore boi! It sounds like Amdi Petersen's Arme but faster and uglier and with all the instruments "ripping" much like the name implies. Throw in some La Piovra and some early 80's USHC from the midwest and you get a smidgen of an idea of the magnitude of just how much ball hair this record can singe. Cool cover art, its angry, and the instruments are played extremely well without ever being predictable. Yeah I know that the last review was a good one too but this came out last year and more people need to pick this up. *Warning* If you live in California do not engage in the joyous fisting presented on this cover, as it is now illegal and considered cruel and unusual punishment.

ILSA, She Wolf of the SS (1975)

Somehow I didn't see this until now. I hadn't heard anything about it. I just assumed it was another mildly offensive, grindhouse film that would make a better trailer than a feature. Man, oh man was I mistaken

Let me begin by modestly stating that this film is fucking incredible. The premise is that “Ilsa” is the heartlessly chesty ruler of a Nazi prison camp- but if you can sexually satisfy her, then she won’t castrate you. Now I know what you’re thinking: “but I don’t think its cool to exploit something as terrible as the holocaust.” Well, fuck you then and stop ruining everyone’s good time because it just so happens that the camp is filled with entirely white Americans of mostly Irish descent in the prison camp so they took the high road even for exploitation. Anyway, now that that asshole is gone... Ahem, most exploitation and “B” movies run the risk of being utter and complete shit with a 30 second action scene and then 89minuets of dialogue while the viewer is left watching a boom mic dangle at the top of the screen. Ilsa just happens to be THE GREATEST EXPLOITATION FILM I HAVE EVER SEEN.
There is sex, violence, torture, nudity, explosions, urination, electrocution, castration, defecation, and sealed with a kiss and an “X” rating. Not to mention some “one liners” that would make Bruce Campbell proud. If I could only recommend to you one exploitation film to represent the genre, this would be it. This inspired two (and a half?) sequels, and has earned a special place in my heart. If this isn’t enough to convince you to see this movie, then see it just for Dyanne Thorne’s knockers, which defy gravity, time and space without the use of silicon. Making her my favorite “NILF” of all time, the “N” being Nazi of course. Dyanne went on to get her Ph. D in Comparative religion, and is now an ordained minister. If you can find this gem on DVD buy it. Try avoid the Korean “uncut” version on ebay because it is not really “uncut” –just like my penis.

And pour out a little of your drink for director Don Edmonds who died less than a month ago on May 31. 2009

5/5- fucking masterpiece

Wasted Time - Futility LP

I have been waiting for this record for quite some time now seeing as both their 7"s made me want to rape and pillage and burn down small villages fueled by adrenaline laced hardcore fury. My personal life aside, this record takes all the elements of Wasted Time you loved and cranks it up to 11 (you know like the amps Spinal Tap used). They play faster, tighter and more brutal than ever but still maintaining that Poison Idea and Boston hardcore vibe with that signature heavy guitar sound. Not only does the new found speed grab my attention but the varying tempos used on this record. One minute its blistering fast, then you got an intense mid tempo rager to beat your wife to. They also employ some other hardcore influences with the closing track "Withdrawal" sounding like an angrier So Cal tune from the 80's. Other songs include "Isolationist", "Burning Bridges To Keep Warm" and the title track "Futility" you get an idea where the lyrics are coming from... an agoraphobic who lives life as a recluse surrounded by way too many cats. No but seriously, this record is pure hardcore mayhem from start to finish. 2009 is only halfway over but this will be the best record of 2009, no contest. If you don't want to take my word for it, download below, listen to it and buy it!

Bad Taste (1987)

Oh! Hello, I didn't see you there. Welcome, I was just thinking about a movie I watched recently called "Bad Taste". Won't you join me in watching the trailer?

This movie was directed by some guy named Peter Jackson. He's famous for making some trilogy about gay midgets or something- I forget the name but they basically walked a lot and threw out their wedding ring, I think it was supposed to be a symbol of why gay marriage is bad or something. Anyway, all shitty-over-rated-trilogy's aside (post your hate in the comments section) this dude used to make some of the most beautiful horror/gorefest/comedies of all time. "BRAINDEAD" AKA "DEAD ALIVE" from 1992 is highly inspired by Sam Raimi's EVIL DEAD trilogy, and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it, and Bad Taste is in the same vein of fun.
Basically the movie is about aliens that come to Earff to gather humans to sell as galactic fast food. The movie uses this very vague plot as an excuse for extreme gore and cheesy jokes. There are some definitely epic gross-out moments that make the film worthwhile but sometimes the storytelling is so confusing that the viewer is left disoriented. Bad Taste was initially made for no budget- as in it was honestly made without money, and shot on weekends: so don't go into this movie expecting much. Peter Jackson himself even plays two characters. All in all I'd say if your a huge fan of, DEAD ALIVE, EVIL DEAD, or you want to see Peter Jackson act in a no-budget movie, I say check it out, otherwise you can afford to miss this.

BLACK AMERICA

These youngsters from Northern Cali ( ya I said Cali, blow me) are here with their debut ep entitled "We're Like Trash Talk, But Good", which made me giggle because they are talking trash on a band named Trash Talk. This ep is unique to say the least, starting with a Spongebob style intro, you can tell these dudes are having a good time, probably writing tunes and playing grab ass simultaneously (Which is no easy feat). For the most part this is mid tempo punk with a nice crisp guitar sound but has some of that Minutemen style funky guitar here and there, some surfy stuff and at times playing some up strums, the guitar player rips and is as versatile as cheddar, which comes in so many forms; everything from spray cheddar to a wheel of cheese. The vocals remind me of the dude from Smut Peddlers or at times of Nikki Sicki so he sounds pretty peeved like perhaps his mom forgot to pack him a chocolate pudding in his lunch, but not the John Brannon I'm gonna destroy you with my seething anger type of way.  Most of the songs have silly names like "Cock Block" or "Girls Are Better Than Boys". If you want to be intellectually stimulated go read some T.S. Eliot but if you want to hear some pretty rockin tunes with some fun lyrics check this out. Out now on Secret Records/ F Label.

Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102293/

Guess what? It's another foreign film... eat a dick. The trailer does not fairly represent this film so here's one of many, many, fight scenes:

I'd only heard rumors and seen clips of this and just finally got around to watching it. Now, I watch a lot of pure unadulterated shitty splatterfest movies that leave me hatting my life for having wasted my time on them (you know, like how your parents feel about you). But this... This was different. This movie was everything it promised it would be. It was so fucking violent I couldn't believe it! There's basically no plot, but it's so full of ridiculous violence and random events that it holds its own. It's just as over the top as Evil Dead 2 or Dead Alive but it takes itself much more seriously, however the jokes it does have seem to get lost in translation. Nevertheless this movie really had it all; bad kung fu, over the top violence and scenes with no relevance whatsoever. This is a must see.
I usually avoid dubbed movies the way republicans avoid talking about their gay family members, however this movie dubbed was especially wonderful because they have like two dudes do the voices for everyone.

Hjertestop

So when I heard that Hjertestop was doing an LP on the illustrious No Way Records I was so excited since their first 7" was pretty rulin but before I got it I heard a few not so positive reviews of it. Unbeknownst to me these people were right, this LP was available to me for free and I still decided not to keep it. I mean it's not terrible, it's like when you order a burger that looks delicious in the picture and then you bite into it and it tastes like a burger but one that was smeared with a light shit flavored secret sauce. They are going for that whole so cal hardcore thing, you know bands like the Adolescents and Bad Religion who had some punches but melody as well. The melody falls short and the tunes just did not give me that firm tug on the scrotum I was expecting. Some of the riffs are pretty catchy but in that BYO records, I'm 45 and shop at hot topic and talk about the old days even though I wasn't there type of way. It's not the worst thing I have ever heard but not even interesting enough to keep around for a once a year spin on ye olde turntable. Download below for their first ep, which is definitely worth checking out and was just repressed in the U.S. by Fashionable Idiots so pick that up and avoid the LP like that clingy girl you accidentally let blow you at last weekend's kegger.

Martyrs

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1029234/

Sorry, no english trailer.

First off- this is not gonna be a foreign movie blog, there's just been a few choice films that required my immediate attention. This 2008 French film is by no means flawless. It had way, way too much stuff going on, and so many twists and turns that the viewer is left more disoriented than my racist grandpa at a quinceaƱera. HOWEVER, it is a fun-as-hell ride to say the least. This definitely has torture-porn elements, like in Hostel or the SAW movies, but it also has some really creative and original concepts in it. The violence is spastic, sudden, and unflinching, but it was the suspense that had me sitting on the tip of my taint with excitement. It's definitely unique, so I say give it a rent, it's the type of movie that you'll love or hate, but ether way it'll stick with you. Region 1 DVD comes to the USA on April 28, 2009.

High Life

This record goes by so fast that I had to listen to it numerous times just to review it. These Texans blaze through 6 tracks of hardcore mayhem that is hard to compare to just one thing. The embracing of the party culture makes me think of local Texas hooligans ANS, also in the style somewhat but definitely have a lot of different elements that make them stand apart. This band would destroy your house with their blistering hardcore and then impregnate your budding teenage sister, you know the one all the guys want to "get with". This has that great sloppy element like Void with mind numbing fast parts and tempo changes that I could see fans of Warkrime being down with. The singer sounds like he ate a baby for breakfast and is now angry about the inevitable indigestion. Instruments are all around solid. This is some interesting hardcore that is worth checking out because it's too hard to fully describe. There is a link to all their recordings from 2008 somewhere but I can't find it, so do the work for me, trust me it will be worth it. That or turn a couple tricks, get some cash and buy their ep from Cowabunga Records.

Tokyo!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0976060/
I decided that it was about time to get my fat-ass off the couch and into a movie theater for some exercise. I had high expectations for "TOKYO!" even though it looked "hipster-up-your-ass"

I was stoked on this, but a little skeptical. I liked Gondry's "Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind", but hated "the Science of Sleep". I liked Joon-ho Bong's "The Host" which was a wacky good time, and I've heard that Leos Carax's "Pola X" pushes the level of decency for its graphic incestuous sex scenes. I went into the theater having heard positive reviews and with an open mind. Although all three stories had some cool and creative elements, none of them were really terrific. Here's my review of all three separate shorts, rapid fire

1. Gondry's short "Interior Design" (chair-leggs-bitch) was so fucking pretentious that I felt embarrassed for entering the theater with the other 7 people there. I'm sure the hipsters will love this one the most, claiming that I did not clearly understand the delicate subtleties of existentialism- no I got it. It was weak, and a waste of time. 2/5

2. Leos Carax's "Merde" (green-suit-sewer-man) I found more enjoyable, and had some really creative and original elements to it, as well as some impressively long takes. For sheer story and creativity- 3/5

3. Joon-ho Bong's "Shaking Tokyo" (fish-face-shut-in) was my favorite of the three. The characters seemed genuine, and had a great feel to it. My only complaint is that the ending was sudden and predictable- Just like Steve Irwin's death. 3/5

Overall- 3/5
Skip it/rent

LET DOWN

This band is so pissed! Probably one of the most pissed bands in hardcore today. If you have not heard Let Down they are a straight edge hardcore band from Pennsylvania. I can hear all you stoners sighing but you know what this band is not preachy and sings about plenty of everyday issues that even you alcoholics can relate to. They sound like SSD's "Get It Away" humping Chain Of Strength's "The One Thing That Still Holds True" into submission. You have the intense vocals that make Springa seem like the fat girl in your seventh grade PE class. The instrumentation embodies the best parts about hardcore and infuses it with breakdowns that can be likened to the late 80's youth crew bands. Breakdowns can go so horribly wrong but these breakdowns are as fresh as a 12 year old girl's panties. They never once take away from the rage and pure energy this band exudes. The tempo changes that this band does are incredible, switching in an instant and keeping you on your toes but at the same time being totally justifiable. This record is intense throughout and although the influences are evident, they pay homage to them in such a way that seems new and exciting, much like seeing your first boob.  Only one song barely breaking the two minute mark this is some great hardcore that I could not recommend highly enough. Once again download below but buy their records, support the band!

Switchblade Sisters

At the recommendation of a friend I recently watched this exploitation classic. I was VERY hesitant because the DVD had Tarantino's face eclipsing half the cover announcing his re-release of the film.

Switchblade Sisters wasn’t half bad. It had your standard 70's b-movie acting and dialogue, bad lighting, and a fabulous soundtrack. It didn't drag the way so many exploitation films do. It had some great all girl knife fights, a brawl against a giant lesbian, and the most violent roller rink incident of the decade. The only thing it needed was just a tad more sex and violence. When I watch a 70's exploitation film I expect more bare breasts and pubic hair than I can handle and sadly this was lacking that. If you're a fan of the genre, or if you watch whatever Tarantino tells you to, it's totally worth a watch.

Let The Right One In

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1139797/

I was a little skeptical when I heard there was another friendship/romance vampire movie coming out, especially since "Twilight" caused hoards of teenieboppers to soil their panties, but I decided to to check it out anyway.

This movie rocked the shit. This little gem from Sweden (Based on the novel by the same name) was one of the best movies I've seen in a long while. It's a wonderful mix of the innocence of childhood, and the dealing of very adult issues. It also put a very human perspective on vampires, much like "Interview with a Vampire" and "Near Dark". This movie was original, creative, endearing, and would escalate to extreme violence without a moments hesitation -much like sex with my stepfather. Several characters are introduced with very little back story, however enough information is provided for the viewer to piece together a good guess about that character's background, which is a refreshing break from mindless Michael Bay garbage that gets pumped out every month. This is definitely a must see, it comes out on DVD and Blu-ray 3/10/09, don't miss it.

Hey gang- it turns out that the american dvd/blu-ray release's subtitle tracks differ a bit from the original release, and not for the better. Fans are demanding a re-release but I doubt its gonna happen, as it's not exactly financially viable. I have the blu-ray version and it's not a deal-breaker but it is annoying as hell. There's no major plot differences, but bits of dark humor and character development do get lost, I think the "dubbed" track is still original but I can't stand dubbed movies with the exception of kung fu. You can check out all the differences HERE. Thanks to Filmdrunk.com for the heads up.

A lot of links are down but i BELIEVE to the best of my knowledge that these have the correct subs. (xvid Eng hardcoded subs from a dvdsrc and i think these are also PS3 compatable) if someone could verify that would be great. Not my links.

MAGNET issued this statement: “We’ve been made aware that there are several fans that don’t like the version of the subtitles on the DVD/BR. We had an alternate translation that we went with. Obviously a lot of fans thought we should have stuck with the original theatrical version. We are listening to the fans feedback, and going forward we will be manufacturing the discs with the subtitles from the theatrical version.” No news for exchange program. Bastard Sons Of Apocalypse

Bastard Sons Of Apocalypse - Strangled By The System LP

No charge d-beat rock and roll! These rowdy Texans blaze through ten tracks of intense d-beat hardcore that will make you want to burn down your local government official's place of employment and/or residence. It's always great when someone can get you pissed at the government all over again! I definitely hear a Discharge influence with the repetition in the choruses in songs like "25 Years" and "Wave Of Death". The vocals and their patterns though come from a more straight forward hardcore approach and give the d-beat a tinge of that 80's hardcore feel. Most of the great current d-beat hardcore bands have vocals that sound like Dr. Claw on meth but this release goes for more of that Totalitar approach. The instrumentation is well executed and not as heavy as some d-beat bands but hits you in the face like an unexpected money shot. Fast unrelenting d-beat hardcore with buzzsaw riffage and pummeling drums. The kind of tunes that when done correctly, make you consider hitting a complete stranger with your car or lighting a homeless man on fire. Great stuff from a promising band. Check out their eps as well. Link below to download but if you find this record buy it! Support the band, buy the vinyl.
